This is a Mabe blister pearl brooch (also known as a "half-pearl") still attached to its host shell. These are distinctive for their flat back and highly iridescent, dome-shaped surface. Unlike traditional round pearls that grow inside the tissue of a mollusk, Mabe pearls grow against the inside of the shell. This contact with the shell creates their characteristic flat side.
